Physical therapy FAQ
Helpful answers before your first visit.
Review common questions about physical therapy, appointments, treatment, clothing, insurance, and home exercises.
What is physical therapy?
Physical therapy helps restore movement and day-to-day function when they have been affected by injury, illness, surgery, or age. Treatment may combine strengthening, flexibility, balance, posture, coordination, and pain-relief strategies while also working to reduce the chance of reinjury.
What conditions can physical therapy address?
Physical therapy may help with orthopedic injuries, arthritis, neurological conditions, recovery after surgery, stroke rehabilitation, traumatic brain injury, weakness, balance problems, and other limitations affecting movement or function.
What happens at the first appointment?
The first visit usually includes a physical evaluation and a conversation about symptoms, daily activities, needs, and recovery goals. The therapist then develops an individualized treatment plan, which may include exercise, hands-on care, education, and other appropriate techniques.
What is a typical therapy session like?
A session may begin with gentle movement, heat, or stretching, followed by activities selected for the patient’s condition and goals. Depending on the plan, treatment can include therapeutic exercise, functional training, manual therapy, massage, or electrotherapy. The therapist may review progress and adjust the program as needed.
How long does a physical therapy program last?
The timeline depends on the diagnosis, severity of the problem, treatment goals, and rate of progress. Some programs are relatively short, while others continue for several weeks or months.
How often will appointments be needed?
Frequency is based on the condition and treatment plan. Two or three visits per week is common, but the therapist will recommend the schedule that best supports the patient’s needs and progress.
What should I wear to physical therapy?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy movement and access to the area being treated. Shorts are often helpful for knee, lower-leg, or ankle conditions.
Is physical therapy covered by insurance?
Many insurance plans include physical therapy benefits, although copayments, deductibles, visit limits, or authorization requirements may apply. Contact the office and your insurance provider to confirm the details of your plan.
Will I need to do exercises at home?
Many treatment plans include a home program to reinforce progress between visits. The therapist will explain which exercises or stretches are appropriate, how to perform them safely, and how often they should be completed.
